PFW AW17 Beauty: Balmain

It was all about a matching eye and lip at the Balmain show, thanks to Tom Pecheux‘s bronzed sultry eye and Dolly Cohen‘s gold lip piece she nicknamed #metalliclipstick. Accompanied by beautiful braided ponytails, designed by Sam McKnight, the trio created this edgy look sported by all of fashion week’s it girls.

THE NATURAL LIPSTICK YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE

My makeup philosophy has always and will always be: wear makeup that works for you. That means it needs to work for your style, your face and your lifestyle. When it comes to lipstick, I tend to prefer sheer stains in natural colours as I don’t have to worry about the upkeep of high maintenance lipstick. Having said that, I LOVE the look of a statement lip – it’s empowering and sexy.
When Burt’s Bees sent me their new 100% natural lipstick collection I wasn’t instantly sold. I’m not the biggest advocate of natural makeup – far from it. For me it has to perform and most natural lipsticks have un-elegant textures coupled with un-modern shade selections. What did catch my attention was the promise of 8-hour hydration. I can’t stand lipstick that dries my lips out – it just looks awful. I also like a satin finish – I know matte colour is on everyone’s lips right now, but to me it can feel a bit flat. Then I had a look at the shades and truth is, I was intrigued.
The Nudes are gorgeous (with ‘Suede Splash” being a particular favourite) – but the standouts are the bold hues: the pinks and the deep reds. These are not shades I usually gravitate towards – I have to be honest, I tried them on just to see…but then I was surprised how much I loved them.

Hot pink is so NOT ME. But I’m so glad I tried it and I think sometimes the best things happen when you step outside your safe zone. I love how ‘Tulip Tide’ dresses up my face. It pops, but it’s a well-balanced pink that will look great on just about everyone.

A dark wine lip adds a bit of drama – I find it’s the fastest way to look pulled together and elegant.  There are many variations to choose from – personally I like ‘Crimson Coast’ because it has red undertones, which lends it warmth and prevents my face from looking edgy.

MY 3 LIP RULES

1 I always prep lips so that the surface is smooth and moisturised. Whilst using a toothbrush is a popular recommendation, I find that too harsh. I buff my lips with a damp warm washcloth and then pat in my lip balm.

2 To make lipstick last the distance, I skip liner and use concealer around my outer lip line instead. The outline won’t be as sharp (which looks prettier) and it prevents the colour from bleeding.

3 When wearing a bold lip, I avoid powder so skin looks fresh, otherwise it can all look too contrived.

Life’s too short to save your prettiest looks for a night out – it’s time to have fun with beauty and it starts with switching up your lipstick! Burt’s Bees lipstick is a game-changer: deeply nourishing whilst delivering serious colour payoff and coverage. With 18 cool full coverage shades to choose from, I challenge you not to find at least 2-3 new faves.
