This is my self-tanning routine for a sunkissed glow all year around. You know I’m not one for sitting in the sun so over the years I’ve tried and tested self-tan products to create a routine that brings me the best results. What I love about self-tan is the warm glow it brings to my skin. It also enables me to wear less makeup. The thing with self-tanning is that it’s not particularly hard to do – it’s the maintenance that’s harder. The key to this is adapting your regular skincare routine to keep your tan glow.
My Tanning Routine
1. Make sure your hair is completely out of your face.
2. Have a self-tanning outfit. I like to tan overnight so I always wear some loose black sweats so I don’t stain my clothes.
3. Ensure your skin is clean. Don’t use an oily or creamy cleanser that’s going to leave a film on the skin. You don’t want anything that’s going to create a barrier on the skin and stop the tan from staying. You want a light, sulphate free, non-drying cleanser. I use my Primark Pore Balance Low pH Sulfate-free Cleanser – one of my favourite neutral cleansers for all skin types.
4. Exfoliate your skin. I exfoliate with the iSclinical Tri-active Exfoliating Mask. It has a slightly grainy texture that I massage into the skin and take down the neck. It has both chemical and physical exfoliants. The reason I use this is because you want something that you wash off to ensure the acid isn’t on the skin when you apply the tan. I don’t want the two pHs to potentially clash and not get the best performance out of my self-tan.
5. Using something like vaseline or Eucerin Aquaphor* over brows to ensure the self-tan doesn’t stay on these areas. This is especially important if you have fair brows.
6. Apply your self-tan of choice. I love to use the Tan-luxe Sleep Oil*. It’s a hydrating and conditioning oil that means I don’t need anything else underneath skincare-wise. I just go straight in with the tan. I’ll add a few drops in the palm of my hands and pat into my skin not forgetting to go down my neck. Then I massage it in thoroughly. I don’t use a lot of product, it’s all about a fresh sun-kissed look for me. The Tan-Luxe Sleep Oil honestly makes this process so much easier – especially as someone with super dry skin. 7. Think about your sleep routine. I sleep on my back and try to avoid getting this on my pillow etc.
How To: Tan Maintenance
The key for your tan to wear well is to adapt your skincare routine accordingly. The day after tanning, I’ll focus totally on hydration. The tan is still developing at this point and DHA can be drying so hydration is key with a good moisturiser and serum. My trusted combination here is Advanced Night Repair* with La Mer Moisturising Cream* on top. Avoid anything with too many actives and formulations that aim to increase cell turnover.
The day after that, I’ll go back to my usual actives and my normal routine. You need that 24 hours to ensure the tan settles.
