best skincare to treat breakouts maskne the alex edit

Managing breakouts and dealing with breakout-prone skin can often be a frustrating and never-ending quest. Whether you’re dealing with hormonal breakouts, stressed skin or maskne it takes time to heal this type of skin inflammation.

When it comes to skincare to treat blemishes, calm and clear the skin you need to choose products that are not overly aggressive or super drying. Instead, reach for those that have a balanced formulation that includes salicylic acid and/or niacinamide. Here are my current favourites that work well to treat active breakouts and take care of the skin keeping inflammation down.

Medik8 Blemish Control Pads*

These pre-soaked pads are a brilliant go-to treatment to tackle breakouts and decongest blocked pores without being aggressive. They are soft, textured pads infused with salicylic acid, allantoin and glycerine so you get that balance of treatment and hydration to nourish, soothe and help heal the skin.

The Inkey List Succinic Acid Blemish Treatment*

This affordable blemish busting treatment has become super popular. With salicylic and succinic acid alongside hyaluronic acid and squalane it treats blemishes whilst keeping skin hydrated and nourished.

Perricone MD Blemish Relief Gentle & Soothing Cleanser*

It’s important to choose a gentle cleanse to avoid creating further inflammation – you need to calm the skin. The entire Blemish Relief range from Perricone MD is great at preventing blemishes whilst maintaining a healthy skin barrier. This calming balmy cleanser doesn’t strip the skin and rinses off easily. With salicylic acid and ultra-fine sucrose it unclogs pores and refines skin texture to reveal a healthier complexion. It also has one of my favourite ingredients, squalane, to hydrate without feeling heavy or greasy.

La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo*

The Effaclar range is formulated with oily/breakout-prone skin in mind but it also works well as a daily treatment moisturiser. Packed with niacinamide, salicylic acid and glycerin it gently treats breakout areas without drying out the skin and helps heal your skin back to a smooth texture.

Zitsticka Press Refresh Mask

Zitsticka specialise in skincare to deal with breakouts at different stages in their cycle. This hydrogel mask is very clever. Packed with salicylic acid to unclog pores, a blend of AHAs to exfoliate and smooth and niacinamide to keep skin clear and clean. Unlike your typical sheet mask, it contains Graphene to help with the absorption of ingredients so that it doesn’t sit on the skin.
